Children’s Play, Learning & Development students achieved Level 1 and 2 qualifications during two intense sessions at Wiltshire College & University Centre Salisbury campus.

Makaton training has proven invaluable for the centre’s students in their early years settings. The students trained with a recognised trainer and learned more than 200 signs.

The unique language programme uses symbols, signs and speech to enable communication and is commonly used in early years settings.

Early Years lecturer Jade Ashford said: “This is the first time students have had the opportunity to do Makaton training and it’s helped them immensely.

“A lot of settings use Makaton for all children, but it is mainly used for children with additional needs who struggle with verbal communication.

“It has been so beneficial to the students that we are now organising more training for them.”
