Wonderful World Book Day at Wylye Valley School

The annual country-wide event, World Book Day was celebrated at Wylye Valley Primary School, Codford. Almost the entire school, staff and pupils, dressed up as their favourite book character and the day was centred around all things literary.

Normally, the school would celebrate World Book Day by working together across year groups and classes, but this year pupils had to be kept in ‘bubbles’, so each class had their own activity.

Little Einsteins looked at a special book without any words (The Journey). Georgie Baker (Reception/Year 1 teacher) was particularly impressed with the ideas that the children came up with throughout the day. “They all had such great concepts relating to the images in ‘The Journey’ and the costumes were amazing.  Well done!”

Meanwhile, Galileo Class had a great time drawing and describing the characters and books they had chosen. Amanda Beeden (Year 1 and 2 teacher) said: “The moment that stood out for me was when all the children came in at the beginning of the day and recognised each other’s books and outfits.  They were all so excited and animated – it made for a very productive day.”

Franklin Class took on the legend of Beowulf – an heroic tale based on the epic poem set in 6th Century Scandinavia. Helen Thornton (Year 3/4 teacher) said: “I was delighted with the reaction to this ancient story – the children showed a good understanding of the story and were able to recall the strange names and qualities of the main characters. The ‘Wanted’ posters they created for Grendel were superb!”

Finally, Newton Class took part in a Literary Scavenger Hunt (finding good opening sentences, for example) and then wrote a short story in the afternoon.  Brad Howarth (Year 5/6 teacher) said “It was fantastic to see the children sharing their love of books.”

Once again, World Book Day was declared a resounding success. Head teacher, Robert Barnes, summed up: “This was a great way to celebrate the first week back at school and I am impressed with the variety of books and characters depicted by the children today.  Extra special thanks must go to the parents who pulled out all the stops, despite the difficulties of lockdown, to ensure the children looked the part on this very special day.”
