On World Book Day, Thursday, March 5, Wylye Valley Primary School, Codford, staged a magnificent celebration of the annual country-wide even.  Almost the entire school – staff and pupils – dressed up as their favourite book characters: but the celebration did not stop there.

Head teacher Sam Horgan said: “The morning’s events focused on a shared story-writing exercise in which each class wrote one section each of four stories. At any one time, four stories were being created across the school. Once one section of the story was completed, a ‘runner’ was sent along to the next class with their part, and the next class continued the story without a clue about how the other class intended it to carry on. This led to the creation of four entertaining and amusing stories with surprising plot twists, curious characters and some fantastic descriptive language.

In the afternoon, the stories were shared during a special assembly for everyone to hear the ending to the story their class had started.  One child was surprised the story had not gone the way their class had predicted – in fact, they had foreseen an entirely different ending. Another child said the day had been the ‘best ever!’ so far.

“As is usual on a Thursday, the day finished appropriately with a lovely production from the ‘Open the Book’ team which visits each week to act out a story from the Bible. The children, as ever, were captivated by the story-telling and it was agreed, by staff and students, that World Book Day had been an out-and out-success.”
