Newton Class at Wylye Valley C of E School, Codford, celebrated a phenomenal achievement this term.  Through their regular ‘daily run’ each afternoon at the school they ran an amazing 1000km.

The health initiative launched in September was called the ‘daily run’ because it takes place every weekday afternoon across the whole school.

Each class takes a 10 minute break from lessons and heads out onto the school field, where they run a set 200m course as many times as they can in 10 minutes. Every child’s distance is added to a ‘running’ kilometre total on the computer, which calculates the distance travelled from the centre of Codford to wherever they have reached in the world. Newton Class ‘reached’ The Shetlands, Norway, midway through Germany, the top of Italy (Lombardio region), South of France, Andorra, and Northern Spain. They now have the tricky classroom choice of deciding which country to investigate further with a chance of experiencing the food, culture and traditions associated with that country.

The children, from Reception to Year 6, continue the ‘daily run’, providing an extra chance to liven them up mid-afternoon and they are excited when seeing where their accumulated kilometres take them next. “Far from viewing the run as a chore, they look forward to it with huge enthusiasm; each striving to better their distance and maybe even make it to Australia by the end of the school year!” the Headteacher said.
