Pupils of Hazlegrove School held their own International Day of Languages to celebrate the wider world as well as raising money for the Wharf Kids Charity.

Wharf Kids supports children affected by Ebola living in one of Sierra Leone’s poorest neighbourhoods. The school was a feast of colour as children donated money by wearing something to celebrate a country of their choice. More than £360 was raised.

Children aged from 2½ to 13 sang songs in Spanish and Mandarin and enjoyed learning snippets of Greek and German. They took part in French conversation, explored a Translation Treasure Hunt and de-coded ancient script, also learning music from around the World.

French teacher, Claire Richards, said: “The day was a fantastic contrast to the Somerset countryside and reminded us all of the small part we play in our wider world.”
