Many children live in an atmosphere of heightened fear in 2020. A local author is providing a fun and simple solution to potential mental health damage on a generation.

Erin Page, of Tisbury, worked alongside children with anxiety and was forced to act when the pandemic accelerated the issue.

Erin said: “There is a huge increase in children being diagnosed with anxiety. Fear is a natural and crucial emotion: it keeps us safe and empowers us to act. Yet our children are being damaged by their fears rather than understanding them. We need to ensure our children emerge from this pandemic confident at handling their fear and empowered by it.”

Erin’s book ‘Freckle – The Child Whose Fear Became Her Superpower’ tackles the issue simply.

Illustrated by Claudia Aaron, also from Tisbury, the fun story draws in young readers, and easily explains the function of fear in the body, with Freckle, the protagonist, learning to turn her worries into power.

Freckle’s website www.superfreckle.com is also full of helpful tips for children on managing their fears, whether slight anxiety or full adrenaline rushes.

The book could be a useful tool in ensuring children can use their emotions positively, embrace the uncertainty of life and turn their fear into a powerful asset, the author claimed.
