‘Diversity’ and what it means in today’s society was explored by Newton Class, at Wylye Valley C of E Primary School, Codford.  The initiative is spearheaded by The Royal Mint to mark the recent release of a new 50p coin ‘in celebration of the Diversity which built Britain – and the contribution of its ‘wonderfully diverse’ communities.’

“The Royal Mint with the West India Committee provided the school with resources to help explore Diversity in Britain and Black British History,” said Brad Howarth, Year 5/6 teacher at Wylye.  “The children spent time discussing and investigating the topic and worked hard creating their own unique 50p coin.”

Each child chose an individual to study and looked at their contribution to diversity in Britain and British society. It was an eye-opening exploration of a current topic and the children embraced the challenge. Indeed, Brad turned the coin design project into a competition in which two worthy winners, who have demonstrated comprehensive research and investigative strategies and incorporated them into their design, will each receive their very own commemorative 50 pence coin in a special presentation packed supplied by The Royal Mint.
