A vacant supermarket building in Shaftesbury town centre sold at auction for £656,000 after an online bidding war.

The former Co-operative store in Bell Street was among 104 lots catalogued in the first online auction of the year by regional land and property auctioneers Clive Emson.

Rob Marchant, Clive Emson’s Dorset auctioneer, said: “This was a rare opportunity to purchase a large town centre retail unit in North Dorset and buying interest in the freehold generated a bidding war, with 117 separate bids. The virtual hammer came down on a final bid of £656,000, which was £76,000 above the lower end of the guide price.

“The existing buildings are obviously well-suited to continued retail use. Alternatively, prospective purchasers may consider full or partial site re-development, subject to all necessary consents but we are not privy to any plans the new owner may or may not have.”

Clive Emson’s next online property auction – the second of eight this year – is on March 24, with lot entries closing on March 2. The catalogue is published online from March 6.
