I vowed not to talk about the pandemic as we are on melt-down about it every day in the news. But then I really wanted to take this opportunity to praise and grumble. First of all, when I compare us to where friends and relatives live, I realise how lucky we are in Salisbury, as most people are adhering to the rules. I also realise that, because of Novichok, our hospital had already had a dry run regarding this and were prepared.

We really do appreciate the sacrifice people working in ICU and emergency services are giving to us all. They work tirelessly day in, day out, sometimes short-staffed because their colleagues have been taken ill: add into that, working in all the heavy and suffocating PPE equipment. And don’t forget the devastation of losing a patient, when they had worked really hard to save them. These are the people that will be having mental health issues, not the snowflakes that can’t go down the pub or have a meal out!

But what really annoys me is when people invalidate the health workers hard work, by popping to different parts of the country, or abroad, on holiday: and being encouraged by adverts like jab and go! They think they are entitled to do what they want, regardless of the consequences to others. It is never
normally these people who get ill, but others who are obeying the rules.

What is surprising is the people I know who are doing this are not who you would term as law breakers. But I will leave you with the sage words of my 16-year-old grandson, who said: “What would those people have done during WW2, as it was six years long and you had the danger of bombs dropping on you?”
