From John Wigglesworth, Durrington

When I first lived in Durrington, it was the largest village in Wiltshire. We had a larger population than even Amesbury. Let’s not forget, including Durrington Walls population, from when it first began, it was estimated by Sheffield University to have at least 1,000 houses before Stonehenge was built!

Who built it? Durringtonians!

Three years ago, I asked our local historians if the land that stretches from the A345 East right down to Bulford had been cleared with searches! It had, but they found nothing of any interest! Just a few months ago, other historians from a different area found connections in a very large area and the search goes on. Today, no doubt the MOD covers that ground.

My interest was in planning consent given by Wiltshire County.

Wiltshire has vast open land still but it is being gobbled up, like in Harnham where 800 are to be built on lovely meadow land. Just what will our cathedral look like then? Travelling on the road from Wilton to our hospital to the South will not be easy in emergencies, that is for sure!

The turnoff from the Devizes Road South down what was once a lovely tree-lined avenue, once an easy turn has more complications than it had before. Why? This took over two years to plan, but it too makes it more difficult for our NHS hospital visits, not to mention emergency traffic!

Oh, back to Durrington! It was Durrington’s population that built Stonehenge, not Amesbury or Salisbury!
