The Food & Crafts Market on May 22 was the first time the organisers of Gillingham & Shaftesbury Show had reopened the gates to Turnpike Showground after months of lockdown.

The socially distanced day out in the countryside gave visitors a safe slice of normality and 553 car-loads of visitors explored the 75 local traders selling regionally-sourced goods.

The market offered everything from goat’s milk soap and home furnishings to meat and vegetables for the Sunday roast.

James Cox, event organiser, said: The aim is to offer local food, drink and craft producers with local businesses, a place to meet customers old and new after a difficult trading year while providing the community a safe outside space to shop locally.”

The second market is on Saturday, June 26, with more traders already booked but the launch of a classic car gathering, the Gillingham And Shaftesbury 100, or GAS100 for short, aims to bring together 100 classic cars for a get together alongside the tantalising smells of the nearby food and drink and crafts market.

Buskers and musicians from the area will help add to the atmosphere.

“Whether you join us at the Market to do your weekly shop, or to just enjoy a cider under the tipi supplied by Southern Tipi Co, you can enjoy a day out and support local businesses,” James added.

The Food & Crafts Market is on Turnpike Showground from 10am until 4pm. Traders are invited to take stalls.

Parking is £3 until midnight on June 23, then £5 per car. Parking must be booked online or phone with the Show Office in advance and is limited.
