A descendant of the man who gave Stonehenge to the nation has died aged 92.

Born in 1928, in East Knoyle Peter Chubb, father, grandfather and great grandfather, served as an independent Salisbury District councillor for many years and as mayor of the city. He lived in Salisbury and supported the city community, especially its football club and Westwood School, in many ways.

Peter was married Evelyn Coombes in Wilton Church and had two children before moving to Salisbury in 1954.

He was elected and served as an independent councillor for St Paul’s Ward in 1987 for 12 years.

“Peter was a great supporter of fair play and he had a commonsense approach to local politics and community matters,” said New Valley News editor David Parker, who was the leader of the Independent Group on the now-politicised district council, at the time.

Salisbury FC website carries the message: “It is with great sadness that Salisbury FC announces the passing of Honorary Vice President, Peter Chubb. He died peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, February 10, 2021, at Braemar Lodge Care Home in Salisbury.”

The funeral service is at Salisbury Crematorium on Thursday, March 11 at 3:45pm but limited to family only.
