New youth media project, Project Spark introduces media production workshops to 13-to-19-year-olds to teach skills in live multi-camera tv, radio production, animation, and more.

The workshops are aimed at those in the age group hoping to pursue a career in creative media or wanting to try something new.

The organisers say trainees will work in crews of six and learn skills to complete the project. No previous experience or knowledge is required and all equipment provided. The workshops are run by experienced, qualified, and DBS checked staff.

The courses give an insight into how professional crews work, and members of the project will have access to a large collection of professional equipment, available to hire for free.

At the end of the project, trainees could showcase their work at an awards evening.

Andy Munns, mySalisbury director, said: “We are really proud to be able to formally launch this project which has been a year in the making. We have put together a fantastic collection of equipment for the sessions to provide a great experience for the members of our groups. This is something I would have loved when I was growing up in Salisbury and I am excited to launch this now.”

Afterschool sessions begin in September, but taster sessions and open days will run throughout the summer. A free outreach programme to all primary and secondary schools in South Wiltshire will also be rolled out, offering an informative day with a media focus.

Andy added: “It’s really important to me that we go into schools and offer our experience days. Classes will work as a team to create a TV show or news bulletin. These sessions offer so many useful learning experiences that range from the technical aspect of production to communication and team skills that are useful in the real-world work environments.”
