Thomas Schreiber, aged 34, from the Gillingham area, has been charged with murder, attempted murder and dangerous driving and is due to appear at Poole Magistrates’ Court on Monday, April 12.

Dorset Police said it received a report at 7.30pm on Wednesday, April 7, raising concern for the welfare of the occupants of an address in Higher Langham, near Gillingham.

Officers found a man in his 80s, and a woman in her 60s, both with serious injuries.

The injured man was pronounced dead at the scene at around 9.15pm. An initial post-mortem examination conducted on Friday, April 9, indicated cause of death was stab wounds to his chest.

The victim has now been formally identified as Sir Richard Sutton.

The injured woman was airlifted to Southmead Hospital in Bristol, where she remains in a critical condition.

Police said the victim died on Wednesday during an incident at a property near Gillingham, Dorset. Sir Richard reportedly owned a string of top hotels in London and had an extensive property and farming portfolio, including the 6,500-acre Benham Estate, West Berkshire and the Stainton Estate in Lincolnshire.

The 34-year-old man, who was known to the victims, was arrested in the Hammersmith area of London after a vehicle was stopped by the Metropolitan Police.

The woman, Anne Schreiber, was said to be “a hugely important part of Sir Richard’s life” and had cared for him for a many years. Her son Thomas Schreiber was charged with the murder, attempted murder and dangerous driving and is due before magistrates in Poole on Monday.

A spokesman said: “Though separated, Sir Richard also remained on good terms with his wife, Lady Fiamma, and very close to their children, who are mourning the loss of a devoted father.

“Employees in the group were united in their shock at what has happened and will need time to come to terms with the loss of such an influential figure.”

Detective Inspector Simon Huxter, of Dorset Police’s Major Crime Investigation Team, said: “Dorset Police have been authorised to formally charge Thomas Schreiber with the murder of Sir Richard, attempted murder of the injured woman, and dangerous driving.”
