It is always uplifting to meet an enterprising and driven teenager.

Wilton resident Scarlett Brooking has set up a Trussell Trust box in the Wilton Hardware Store. Taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Scarlett is required to do something in the volunteer sector.

“Many of my friends decided to volunteer in charity shops but I wanted to do something a bit different,” Scarlett told New Valley News. “Looking into different ideas I remembered my work at the Trussell Trust and the FCSI when I helped pack shoe boxes for deprived children at Christmas. After asking the Trussell Trust, they provided me with an empty food box.”

Scarlett approached Martin and Wendy at The Wilton Hardware Garden and DIY store: “They were very welcoming and happy to put the box in their store. After posting flyers through doors I am happy to say the box is filling up with tins, biscuits and coffee. I collect the food once a week and take it to the Trussell Trust warehouse where they weigh the contributions then distribute them.”

It is admirable seeing a 13 year-old be so community minded. “I want to help people, to make a difference and keen to keep Wilton as a strong community.”

Martin and Wendy said they would have the box for an extended period. “We admire Scarlett for what she is doing and are very happy having the box in our store. Please do pop in and drop food in the box. You won’t feel you have to buy something!”

The Trussell Trust food box is at The Wilton Hardware Garden and DIY store, 6 West St, Wilton, Salisbury SP2 0DF
