Wilton Town Council is to debate a motion supporting current planning regulations rather than the new, less-controlled planning system proposed by the government.

The council will debate the motion put forward by Cllr Peter Edge at the next council meeting on October 6 if permitted by the new mayor Cllr Andrew Kinsey.

Cllr Edge wants the council to voice its concern that the government proposals seek to:

1. Reduce or remove the right of residents to object to applications near them.
2. Grant automatic rights for developers to build on land identified as ‘for growth’.
3. Remove section 106 payments for infrastructure and their replacement with a national levy.

He also wants to the council to publicly support the Royal Institute for British Architects (RIBA) in calling the proposals ‘shameful’ and say they ‘will do almost nothing to guarantee delivery of affordable, well-designed and sustainable homes’ and that reforms are opposed by the all-party Local Government Association, currently led by Conservative Councillors.

He is asking the council to take part in the current consultation and to make representations against the proposals.

Cllr Edge also wants the council to highlight its concerns to local residents and other parish councils through WALPA, and the wider public.
