By Pete Langford, lead singer and founder of The Barron Knights, the 60s hit-making band

What a lovely time of the year. I just love walking around the garden seeing all the buds on the hedges appearing, and same on the fruit trees,The pear buds look so healthy.

My greenhouse is now packed with seeds showing growth. Sweet peas, cosmos , white and lemon, sunflowers, almost ready to plant out, broad beans, suprifin: they are very bushy and also good for small gardens and produce loads. I love my patio pots full of flowers, and orange Calendula do such a great show for such a long time, but must be dead-headed to make them produce more flowers, like you do with Cosmos and Dahlias.

I’m trying different tomatoes this year but I will not stop growing Tigerella. Their taste is wonderful and they produce so much, as do marinade. I will never stop recommending both.

I’ve already planted outside, Centurion onions, great show last year, so why not stick to what you know? Also radish and spring onions are in big pots on the patio, garlic in one of the raised beds looking strong which is very pleasing. Last year, I was disappointed with their result, so fingers crossed all will be good.

Chelsea Flower show is now September and that will be The Barron Knights’ 10th year doing our Saturday performance, so now awaiting confirmation. We Barron Knights haven’t performed a concert since March 2020, but I’ve just had email from the Johnny Dankworth theatre called The Stables, near Milton Keynes, that June 25 is going ahead and almost sold out. They have only 35 seats available in the 400-seater, so its going to be a great night and we will have to rehearse very hard to get back to knowing our two-hour performance.

Great gardening everyone……
