The old adage has been revived but slightly revised: ‘an apple a day keeps obesity at bay’, according to British Apples and Pears.

The fruit growers marketing group claims: “The Government’s Obesity Strategy is an extremely positive step in helping Britain get active and eat better. Losing weight healthily is a great target but it’s important to provide guidance on how to go about this practically.

“British Apples and Pears are helping combat Britain’s obesity crisis and encouraging Brits to swap sugar-laden snacks and enjoy an apple a day as a refreshing, nutritious alternative to the usual high sugary. Covid-19 shouldn’t mean we compromise on healthy eating, and with research showing young adults aged 16 to 24 consuming an average of 1,360 calories per day from sweet snacks, now is the time to turn the tide.

“Apples are lower in calories than many snacks and are associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, including strokes and heart attacks. It’s imperative we increase the amount of fibre-rich plant foods, like apples, in our diet to encourage the growth of more ‘friendly’ bacteria and play an important role in helping us stay healthy. Apples are full of vital vitamins, minerals and a wide variety of phytochemicals and also provide needed hydration as they are 86% water while bursting with flavour and giving your gut a nutritional boost.

“Let’s support each other, help fight the current obesity crisis and introduce an apple a day as an easy place to start.”
