A business based in Chitterne and running for 25 years is focused on re-using redundant IT equipment to benefit to the community.

Staffed with 35 qualified technicians, it is a Licensed Data Wiping Specialist & Recycling business, using the best available techniques. Blackmore is one of just six Companies, called SITAD’s (Secure IT Asset Disposal), accredited to ADISA Distinction with Honours level in the UK. They have contracts with many companies, NHS, universities and government departments, as data destruction is guaranteed.

At Sustainable Warminster’s monthly Zoom meeting earlier this month, 18 members heard an enlightening talk by Simon Barfoot of Blackmore IT.

Simon explained that Blackmore re-purposes and recycles IT equipment.

A scheme called Donate provides laptops, tablets and phones for learners. Simon said: “This is very heart warming and fulfilling. It is a long-term project providing equipment for people of any age who need it. It is expected to run at least until 2023 to help bridge the digital divide.”

Marion, from Social Prescribing at the Avenue Surgery, said some older people do not have any access to laptops etc or training. It was suggested that older schoolchildren could be asked to help.

Simon explained that if Blackmore could re-use equipment, every material such as copper, gold, and aluminium is recycled and sent back into the manufacturing process. Also, carbon offset can be measured, with 40% to 50% recycled – some exported as parts and components. Nothing goes to landfill, he claimed.

They take cables, batteries for digital, routers, phones, PCs, and laptops,  but no plastics (inkjet printers), TFT or CRT displays or hazardous materials, including fridges and freezers are taken. There is no limit to the amount at present.

Wiltshire Council use a company in Essex (Blackmore will tender again). They plan to collate a recycling directory in the future.

THE DONATE IT PROJECT

Providing laptops, tablets and phones for home learners

Kingdown School is keen to participate in the scheme and has been liaising with Sustainable Warminster.

From March 22, a permanent drop-off point at the school reception is for people to donate unwanted/unused IT equipment.

The following items can be donated: laptops, PCs, tablets, phones, routers, cameras, mains leads, power supplies, connectors and leads, AC adaptors, batteries, carry cases, etc.

For further information on exactly what you can donate, either visit the Blackmore IT website at www.r3cycle.co.uk or contact Simon on DonateIT@r3cycle.co.uk

For Covid safety, take all equipment in carrier bags:  a consent form must be signed on drop off, and only during school opening hours.
