Winners of the Salisbury Scarecrow, Gardens and Allotment annual competition were presented with their awards by David Bradley, environmental services manager for the city council.

He told the gathering about the history of allotments and their value in society today.

Certificates were presented to the three winners of the Scarecrow Competition, judged by The Mayor, Cllr Caroline Corbin, earlier in the year. First was Diane Youngman, the second was Carole Day and the third was Richard Shaw. All three colourful creations are on allotment sites in the city.

The Garden’s Competition was judged on photos submitted by the gardeners this year and four gardens received Silver Gilt Awards – John Reardon, Jo and Chris Selley, Diane Youngman, and Robert Stokes, Brickett’s Hospital Almshouses.

Allotment wardens nominated tenants for Best Newcomer Awards and other plots entered were awarded Bronze, Silver or Gold awards. Three Bronze certificates, five Silver and nine Gold winners were awarded. Overall winners Stephen and Carole Day were presented with a trophy as well as a certificate for their plot at the Tunnel Allotment site.

The competitions in 2022 are planned on a grander scale. Contact parks@salisburycitycouncil.gov.uk for more information.
