Despite June 21 restrictions being pushed back, Gillingham and Shaftesbury show must go on so the event returns this summer to reunite agricultural show enthusiasts on August 18 and 19.

Last year the event was cancelled due to the pandemic, but this year’s two days of farming fun replaces the regular one day event.

Organiser James Cox revealed to New Valley News all the latest details for this year’s farming get-together.

James said: “Everyone has been so insanely supportive of the show whether trade stands, sponsors, members or visitors.

Agricultural shows fall under stage two of the roadmap as an outdoor and socially-distanced event.

We are still planning ahead as we originally were. Our site is over 70 acres, so you can socially-distance and it will be a safe and fun day out.”

Despite a difficult and stressful 14 months, James and his team are more excited than ever about the show’s prospects.

“There are a lot of changes to make things safer. We have put spaces between stands and we no longer have a shopping marquee. We have a new heavy horse exhibition area, and for the first time in a long time, we have steam engines, which are exciting for many people.

“Visitors can expect the same fantastic family day out as always. We are going to reunite the rural community safely. There will be amazing acts, lots of shopping, all the livestock, farming education area, heavy horses, and show jumping. There will be a whole range of things going on,” he added.

At the heart of every event are the committee members, and Gillingham and Shaftesbury Agricultural Show are no different.

“Our lovely chairman’s involved with the show and committee members have worked hard to make their sections work over two days.”

The show holds a rich history dating back to the formation of Gillingham and Shaftesbury Agricultural Society in 1930.
